Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous sadly never lived to see the Arab Spring but his play certainly foreshadowed the events that were to come and speaks to the very heart of human freedom. Mou’mina, asked by the Mufti to to help free her husband, the provost of the nobles, after having been imprisoned for being with a courtesan, agrees with a price – her freedom. She then transforms herself into a courtesan, infatuates the entire society, and turns the social order of Damascus on its head.
