El Cimarrón is based on the biography of Estaban Montejo who began life as a slave in Cuba in 1860 in the brutality of a sugar plantation. Living to the age of 103, Montejo witnessed slavery, its abolition, life as a runaway in the forest, the Spanish-Cuban-American War, and the Revolution. The piece is described by its composer as a recital for four musicians but Ted Huffman’s production revealed it to be much more compelling as fully realized stage production.
