Pamina Devi

This piece by Sophiline Cheam Shapiro turns one eye toward’s Mozart’s operatic exploration of enlightened change in the aftermath of the French and American revolutions and the other eye towards her own experience with ‘enlightened’ change and revolution which came along with the cruelty and suffering under the regime of Cambodia’s Khmer Rough regime which lasted from 1975 to 1979.

Produced by the Khmer Arts Ensemble at the Phillips Center in Gainesville, FL in 2007 with subsequent touring to Carolina Performing Arts, Chapel Hill, NC, The Joyce Theater, NYC, University Musical Society, Ann Arbor, MI, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, College Park, MD and Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
