A Serbian wedding in Aix-en-Provence in July? What could be better?
Svadba, which means marriage in Serbian, is an opera for six female voices by composer Ana Sokolović. This production, for which I am designing the lighting, opens at the Festival d’Art Lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence, in the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume, on July 3.
It is co-directed by my longtime collaborators Ted Huffman and Zack Winokur (Les Mamelles de Tirésias, Most of the Boys, Der Kaiser Von Atlantis, and El Cimmarón among others) with musical direction by Dáirine Ní Mheadhra, sets and costumes by Samal Blak, projections by Sven Ortel, and features the voices of Florie Valiquette, Liesbeth Devos, Jennifer Davis, Pauline Sikirdji, Andrea Ludwig, and Mireille Lebel.
